Online World Travel Guides
Online, world travel guides have grown more in the past ten years than any other time in recent history. The ease of creating a travel guide online, and the accessibility of billions of people make the internet the place for world travel planning in the future. There are literally millions of travel guides available today, and to provide a thorough analysis of all of them would be a waste of time.
Here is a list of my favorite online world travel guides; some are free, some are reasonable, all of them are invaluable.
Travelfish.org As they say on their website “100% original Asia travel intelligence authored by dedicated travelers who know what they're talking about.” This is completely accurate in my opinion, and have come to rely solely upon this site for my Southeast Asia adventures. They provide excellent information about Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. My favorite aspect is that you can click on a country and browse a list of FAQ’s such as “how far will five bucks a day get me?” or “is air conditioning worth it?” These are real questions from real people, and Travelfish answers them in a succinct professional manner. Highly recommended.
Gridskipper.com This is the number one travel site for anyone interested in urban travel. Everything about Gridskipper screams big city… this may not be a travel guide you want your coworkers to see you browsing (the Brazilian ads are showstoppers).
Virtualtourist.com Simply put, Virtualtourist is the largest online world travel guide in the world, and definitely one of the best. If you want to see the world through the eyes of travelers around the world, this is the place to start.
Thorn tree. Lonely Planet’s forum for travelers to sound off about whatever adventures they encounter. It is very similar to Virtualtourist, and just as good. Rather than scouring for online world travel guides, stick with these four: they will provide you more research than you could ever possibly need. |
