Free International Travel Guides
Free international travel guides abound, thanks to the internet. While they may not be as robust as a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide, online travel guides can give you more information in less time. On my last trip to southeast asia, I didn't even bother with a book - all the intelligence I needed was on one site.
Here's a list of where you can find (mostly) free international travel guides:
Travelfish.org. Far and away my favorite site on southeast asia. Travelfish covers Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia in high detail. What I truly love about this site is their ability to convey information you need in the shortest amount of time: their navigation is simply brilliant, and anyone looking to learn more about these countries should check them out.
Thorn tree. A forum offshoot of Lonely Planet - this is a great place to ask questions, and get answers from people that are travelers, not tourists. Have a concern about a specific area? Visa requirements unclear? Are those laws really enforced? Run it up the thorn tree and find out. I have heard whispers in this forum that Lonely Planet is planning to launch a buy-what-you-want program, where people can purchase only certain parts of a guidebook at a fraction of the cost. Check out their site to learn more.
Bootsnall.com. A site loaded with international travel guides, focusing mainly in Europe. There are also great interviews, pictures and fellow travelers tales to share.
In my opinion, these are the three best places online to find cheap or free international travel guides, and have used all three with great success on my adventures.
