Short-Term Health Insurance Travel
Short-term health insurance for travel is one of the least romantic aspects of the getaway. After all, it's a lot more fun planning which island you're going to scuba dive on, which Mountain you want to hike, which four-star restaurant you'd like to dine at…still, short-term health insurance is a necessity, and should be treated as such.
It's important to get a policy that least covers some if not all of any emergency medical evacuation. It costs over $60,000 to be airlifted out of Thailand; can you imagine fronting the bill for that with out health insurance? Before you go out and purchase a short-term health and travel insurance plan, check to see if you're currently covered either from the state, parents, or other family members.
You can buy a short-term health insurance plan from a student union or travel agency. Make sure you take the time to read the fine print before signing on the dotted line.
Here's a list of tips to help you purchase a short-term health insurance travel plan that won't break the bank:
- Check with your credit card providers to see if they ensure some or all of your travel if booked with their credit card.
- Check your policy to see if they allow risky business, such as motorcycling, scuba diving and rock climbing. Last time I checked a Thai massage was still insurable.
- Figure out how much your belongings are worth, and compare that to the price of the policy; this should help you determine whether or not your belongings are worth insuring in the first place.
For anyone looking for short-term health insurance, travel is perhaps the most often cited reason. Don't despair: I've purchased plans they cost me less than $40 a month that would've covered me in any emergency. Ideally you'll never need the insurance, but the peace of mind that it provides is invaluable.
