Obtaining a Mexican Passport
The nuts and bolts behind obtaining a Mexican passport
Recently a friend of mine needed to get a Mexican passport (dual citizen with the US) and she had the hardest time finding any information on where to begin. After an hour or so, we finally stumbled across this website: http://www.sre.gob.mx/
It answers any and all questions you may have about traveling to and through Mexico, including which type of passports and visas are issued, which countries allow Mexican passport holders to enter visa-free (or buy one while there) and contact information for the Mexican Consulate in Washington, D.C.
Another great resource for Mexican visa insurance information is at Wikipedia. Check out this page, which explains the visa requirements around the world in one tidy little chart: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_passport
My friend had no issues whatsoever after consulting these resources. She was able to get her Mexican passport quickly , and has used it several times due to business. General advice for obtaining a passport is as follows:
Handle passport issues as quickly as possible. Many countries will not let someone in with a passport that has less than six months validity on it.
Avoid passport “expeditors.” Outside of last minute business trips, you should be able to deal directly with the Mexican Embassy. You can expect to get your passport within three weeks of applying, and there is a two week option that costs more. Companies that promise to get your passport in record time are basically knocking on the Embassy’s door and charging a service fee. Avoid these if possible!
In short, obtaining a Mexican passport is pretty easy. Just make sure to plan ahead… in fact, you should apply right now! |
