Maps and Driving Instructions to Destinations
A review of the best applications that provide maps and driving instructions to destinations…
It seems to be an ongoing debate among drivers nationwide as to where you can find the most reliable source for maps and driving instructions to destinations: for the sake of this article, we’ll compare only the Google Maps and Mapquest. Many people are now using Yahoo’s new map service, though it draws its information from the same source as Mapquest (TeleAtlas) so comparing the two is redundant. Here are the real “apples to apples” comparisons that will help you decide which provides better maps and directions:
Detroit to Tallahasee, FL
Mapquest: 995 miles; 16 hours 9 minutes
Google Maps: 989; 15 hours 59 minutes
San Francisco to Denver
Mapquest: 1268 miles; 18 hours 27 minutes
Google Maps: 1266 miles; 17 hours 56 minutes
Las Vegas to Chicago
Mapquest: 1750 miles; 25 hours 50 minutes
Google Maps: 1750 miles; 25 hours
So what gives? Why does Google always come in with a lower estimate, even when the mileage is the same (as in the case of Las Vegas to Chicago)? Are these driving instructions accurate to their intended destinations?
Here’s my theory on the matter: the routes are very different, which, if the maps and estimates are correct, Google gives better instructions, and allows you to reach destinations faster. The different map options are an added bonus (you can view traditional maps, satellite or images) and the overall navigation I superior.
I also must give Google maps the nod when it comes to usability. It takes less clicks to get the directions and maps, plus it is easier to use the “return directions” feature (Mapquest has it, but it took awhile to find it). However, I’m the first to admit this test is not at all conclusive. There are far too many factors to measure, and besides, I ain’t no scientist! However, this simple test is enough to sway my vote to Google when it comes to finding accurate maps and driving instructions to destinations .
