Is Hong Kong a Country
"Is hong kong a country?" Find out...
The short answer to this question is "no." However, there is a more detailed explanation for the real story. Hong Kong has never been its own country. It was occupied by the British in 1841, with outlying areas added over the next few decades. Though over 90% of its occupants speak Mandarin, it remained under British rule for almost 150 years.
On December 19, 1984 an agreement was made between Great Britain and China, which would turn over control of Hong Kong to China on July 1st, 1997. At no point would Hong Kong be a country.
OK, so is Hong Kong a city? Well...
Technically speaking, pursuant to the agreement between Great Britain and China, Hong Kong is known as the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It is almost completely self-ruling, with the exception of foreign and military issues. Interestingly enough, it is the size of a city (much like Singapore) with the powers of a country, when it is in fact neither. Go figure.
So what about Singapore? Is Singapore a country or a city?
Singapore is a country that gained its independence from Malaysia in 1967. Since declaring its independence, Singapore has prospered and become a model for other Asian countries. An interesting bit of trivia is that Singapore's national savings rate is close to 40% (compared to 1% in the US).
Is Hong Kong a country-run entity, or self-governing?
A little of both. While China technically controls Hong Kong, they agree not to interfere with Hong Kong's economic policies. Socialist governing does not apply to Hong Kong, nor will it likely be an influence in years to come. |
