Save Yourself The Hassle: Apply For A Travel Visa
As if passports weren’t enough hassle (I just renewed my yesterday), many countries require you to apply for a travel visa just to enter. Think of it like a cover charge: “Man, we gotta check out this kickin place, and the cover’s only forty bucks!”
Honestly, when you consider that it costs less to enter Thailand than a swanky nightclub in New York, it doesn’t seem so bad.
In order to apply for a visa, you will need to do the following…
Obtain several (just in case) copies of passport sized photos. If you are planning an extended trip to many different companies, it is advisable to get all your photos at once, so you don’t spend hours running around trying to get them at the last minute. Purchase at least two passport sized photos for each country you plan to need a travel visa for.
Contact your local embassy. As much as I enjoy working on this website, the government website’s travel section will always provide the most up to date information on visa requirements. They will inform you of the fees associated with a visa, its limitations, and which visa would be right for you (student, tourist, business, immigrant, etc.).
Procrastinate. Unlike passports and immunizations, which should be handled as soon as possible, you should wait as long as possible before applying for a visa. Why? Many visas are effective immediately, and are only good for a certain period of time (generally one to three months), so you don’t want to enter Cambodia with a one month visa you purchased three weeks ago.
PLEASE BE AWARE SOME COUNTRIES DO NOT ALLOW YOU TO BUY A TRAVEL VISA WITHIN THEIR BORDERS. Vietnam, for example, requires you to have a visa in hand at the border; if you don’t they will send away (it happened to me, don’t test them on this!). When you are ready to apply for a travel visa, follow these steps and you’ll breeze right through customs!
