Top Notch Womens Travel Hats If You’re Hitting The Road

My wife and I are planning yet another adventure, this time throughout southeast asia during the dry season, before moving towards Nepal for some serious trekking. As you may know, I am by nature a minimalist, with the exception of three things: beds, shoes and hats. My wife, a fellow vagabond, is of a similar disposition. Here are several womens travel hats we (alright… she) looked at and found would be beneficial for such an extended journey:

The tropical winner:

Outdoor Research: Seattle Sombrero Womens Hat. What caused us (OK, her) to check out this hat was the incredible number of positive reviews it received at altrec.com (the definitive site for travel gear reviews). Made with a Gore-tex lining, this sucker is waterproof, even in a torrential downpour. It has a cinch band for adjustments (particularly in heavy winds… great for Asian monsoons) and the brim stays stiff after months of abuse. Advertised for $49.95.

Pros: Great for staying dry and keeping the sun off your face.
Cons: Breathable design will not keep you warm.

The high-altitude winner:

Mountain Hardwear: Dome Perignon Hat. The only thing better that Mountain Hardware’s wordplay is their genius designs (now that’s using your head…). This is one of the most popular hats on the market today, and is great for men and women’s use. I tried it on, and could’t believe how well insulated it was. The reason it turned out to be the design: MH uses two layers of fleece. In addition, my wife and I have very different sized heads (she would claim I’ve always had a big head), yet this hat fit both of us perfectly. I don’t really know how that’s possible, but it’s true!

As you can probably guess, the pros and cons are the exact opposite of the Seattle Sombrero, which is why she ended up going for both womens travel hats. You can learn more about both of these at altrec.com.
