Replacement Tent Poles
There is nothing worse than finding yourself stranded at a campsite with a few broken tent poles. Naturally, it is advisable to bring along at least two replacement tent poles for every ten on your trip (I've never had more than that break on a trip in my life). You can purchase replacement poles at any camping store, though I personally would recommend an army surplus store; they usually have poles for cheap and have been road tested for quite some time.
To replace tent poles, you will need a sharp pair of scissors and a long strand of tent wire. Both are very easy to find, and can be purchased at an army surplus store. Save yourself time and buy these when you buy your tent.
Firstly, run the wire through the poles until there is about six inches extra sticking out the other side. Then cut the wire using the scissors (or hunting knife, hatchet, etc.) and tie the end in a large enough knot to prevent the wire from falling out. It is best to store your replacement poles folded up; this will help keep there dexterity for much longer.
If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of a broken tent with no spare parts, you can always solve the issue for the night with a strand of duct tape. Put the pole together and wrap the connecting parts with tape (wrap several times around). I've gotten away with this for a few days, but if you're camping in heavy wind/rain, this will not last long.
In conclusion, remember to purchase replacement tent poles prior to your camping trip, as well as the proper tools to help repair any broken ones along the way.
