Generally, you can purchase car tents for SUV’s vans and station wagons (and any other vehicle with a hatch back). Theoretically, you could use one with any car, and just attach the tent sleeve to the trunk; however, most tents aren’t designed for this, and may require some extra handiwork on your part. Once you attach the tent sleeve to your car, all you have to do is tighten the string so that it fits snugly. This will help ensure the inside stays dry during heavy rain. The main benefit of car tents is your ability to connect the inside of your tent (where you sleep, rest, and hang out) to the back of the car (where you generally store food items, toiletries, etc). This is the equivalent of connecting your kitchen and your bedroom with a short hallway; a very nice feature if you are camping in near freezing temperatures. When you set up your tent, make sure to set the door facing the wind. This way, mosquitoes will gather on the other side to avoid the wind. Also, try your best to dry out car tents before folding them up, as this prevents molding. When you are ready to roll your tent up, make sure that windows are left open to ensure the tent is packed tightly. Before you purchase your car tent, measure the circumference of it and make sure it fits the outside of your vehicle. The last thing you want is discovering they don’t fit while you’re standing in the middle of the woods. In conclusion, car tents are a great family camping addition, and will certainly help you out in cold weather. |
