Canvas Camping Tents
Canvas camping tents are the ultimate form of lodging in the wilderness. No other form of camping tent can match the sturdiness and durability they provide. I have hiked and camped all over the world (well, not all over, but on several continents) and, while I generally prefer smaller trekking tents, I have lived in a canvas tent for several months in Yosemite with much success.
There are many different varieties of canvas, or wall tents. Depending on your surroundings and your objectives, you may want to go with just the standard frame (frame, door, canvas) or decide to customize with a stove, porch, utility racks and clothing racks if you are planning a longer trip.
While it should go without saying, I’ll say it anyway: if you aren’t planning on spending more than a few days in the same location, a canvas tent is not the way to go. The set up takes awhile, and you’ll be forced to lug a lot of extra equipment around with you.
If, however, you want to settle in for awhile, this is the way to go. When I stayed in Tuolumne Meadows in upper Yosemite, I spend four months in a canvas tent with one other person. We had bunk beds, clothing racks, and a wood stove. Several times it snowed heavily, and it once rained for three weeks straight; despite all these weather we were warm and dry. I have experienced several wet nights with even the best camping tents, which is why I highly recommend these. The best resource for purchasing canvas camping tents online is kwikkamp.com. They have several different models available, from bare bones to full on luxury. You can also purchase accessories from them, such as porch add-ons, clothing racks, small kitchen setups, etc. The beauty of this lies in its value; you can purchase one of their camping tents for less than the cost of one night in a really nice hotel. |
