Many online travel agencies offer a flight status update for all of their clients. Orbitz's airplane tracking system is one of my favorites; you can sign up for it when you book online. They will call you in the morning and several hours prior to let you know what the status is. The first time I used this service I failed to check my phone (flight departed at 6 AM) and found out at the airport that my flight was cancelled. Ouch.
The service I have used and recommend is FlightStats. There are two ways they provide their service: you can either access their information on their site (flightstats.com) or you can add their widget to your own site, which is a great way to add value to your own visitors.
FlightStats also offers a suite of services for travel agencies, where travel agents can tell at a glance which one of their passengers may be in trouble, and if (and how) this affects the rest of the clients itinerary.
The final method of tracking airplane flights is old school: go ahead and contact the airlines directly, via phone or website. No matter how you slice it, tracking airplane flights will only get easier in time.
