India Travel Costs
India travel costs are among some of the lowest in the world, and the culture, history and people among the most interesting. There are of course certain considerations to be made regarding your budget, of course. You could easily survive on ten dollars a day, provided you sleep in a dirty room and live on rice and the occasional curry. Bump that up to twenty dollars a day, and you are in a whole new realm (one that most backpackers are comfortable with).
Let's take a look at the average travel costs in India:
- Flight to India from US: $1000-1500 (depending on season)
- Average room with clean bed and sheets, own bathroom: $8
- Average meal on the street: $2-3
- Bus Ticket: $5-10
It is important to note that you could actually get by on less, but most people would find the alternatives priced cheaper than the averages listed here to be a little too shoddy for their tastes. However, I have met one German traveler who boasted he was able to live in India for three months on less than six dollars a day (I prefer to spend around twenty).
India travel costs are really a reflection of how quickly you travel from one town to the next. If you learn to travel slower, spend more time on the beach (or in the mountains) walking and meeting the locals, you will find your expenses can drop rather dramatically. Also, if you can get out of the main cities and into the countryside (which is much nicer, in my opinion) you will realize a savings.
India travel costs are not something to be concerned over; even if prices were to double, you would still be able to live comfortably, and the magic of India should not be measured by price.
