Fun Kids Vacations

Fun kids vacations should provide two things: a chance for children to explore the world around them, and memories that they will hold on to for decades to come. I still remember the trip to Cleveland with my old man when I was a kid: the roller coasters, the Football Hall of Fame, the fried chicken…

Here are the two most fun kids vacations that are suitable for the whole family:

The Southwest. The beauty of this area lies in its variety. From the awe inspiring depths of the Grand Canyon to the otherworldly pinnacles (or hoodoos) of Bryce Canyon, the stretch of land between Arizona and Utah is among the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. If your children are interested in geology and/or history, you can point out that the top of the Grand Canyon is made of the same material found at the bottom of Zion National Park, and that the top of Zion is the same material as the bottom of Bryce Canyon, hence the name “the staircase canyons.” While in the southwest, don’t miss the opportunity for your kids to spend the evening in Monument Valley with a Navajo guide. They’ll love the music, and the jeep ride into the valley is worth the price alone!

Washington D.C. This historic district is a great vacation spot for families: not only do you get more American history crammed into one spot than anywhere else in the country, almost all of them are free (the Spy museum is a notable exception). Make sure to take your kids to Arlington cemetery to watch the changing of the guard (performed every half hour), and to the Smithsonian Museums (let them choose which to see, they’re all pretty good). Try and arrive in the district at night time, and walk around the Lincoln memorial and WW II memorial at night time; less people, and the lighting is magnificent. And did I mention they were free?

Both of these fun kids vacations are great for the whole family, and aren’t a strain on your budget either. In my opinion, try the Southwest in the spring, and D.C. in the fall if possible.
