Istanbul itself is a worldly city in its own right. As Napoleon pointed out: "If all the Earth were one nation, Istanbul would be its capital." Istanbul is the third most populous city in the world (behind Mumbai and Karachi, respectively) and is the only city in the world located on two continents. Originally known as Byzantine as far back as the seventh century B.C., Istanbul's current name is Greek for "the city" or "downtown." It is also an impressively beautiful city, that incorporates old world romance with the promise of a better future. Enroute to Athens most cruises will stop at the wind swept village of Santorini, whose large white cliffs are somewhat reminiscent of the cliffs of Moher in Ireland, made that much more impressive due to the fact your are on an island. Athens is generally the western most point for cruises from Istanbul, and is a wonderful finish to a one or two week cruise. Athens, like Istanbul, is a modern city with a rich history. As you work your way up towards the Acropolis and the Parthenon, it is almost as if time has stood still. You are drawn back thousands of years, back to the ancient Greeks, the civilization responsible for prompting Western philosophy. Working your way downhill, you'l enter the modern city, replete with dining, shopping, bazaars and the legendary Plaka District. Istanbul Athens cruises are one of the most romantic trips anyone could hope to take. I highly recommend taking a cruise such as this with your significant other, and/or close family. It has something for everyone, from history buffs to buff beachcombers.
