Gocek Islands Cruises
The lowdown on the Gocek Islands and Cruises
Located in the Fethiye district on the southwestern tip of Turkey, Gocek is a highlight for many cruises along the Aegean Sea. Up until recently, boats were the primary method of reaching the town; however, the completion of a new tunnel has made driving a viable option.
Many people visit Gocek proper, but the twelve surrounding islands are the gem. Many people use the town as a starting point for a cruise (known affectionally as Blue Cruises), though it is also possible to tie in additional stops in Kekova and surrounding areas within Fethiye.
Keep in mind that the temperature along the Gocek islands can easily break 100 Farenheit in the summer, so expect to spend some time in the shade! Many people enjoy the region for its white sand beaches and clear Mediterranean waters, though the shopping district in Gocek draws crowds as well.
If you're expecting Gocek to be as isolated as it is idyllic, think again. On average, there are between 2,000 and 2,500 gullets (local term for yacht) sailing around the area. Of course, these gullets cover over one dozen islands in the area not to mention the water in between them!
The main cruise lines servicing the Gocek Islands Odysseus Cruising, Cruise Turkey and Ideal Service. You can learn more about current deals and special offers at their websites. Furthermore, a wealth of information on Gocek Islands cruises can be found at the thegocek.com.
One final consideration: try to built a stay at Gocek into a larger itinerary that includes the rest of Western Turkey, or consider adding on a few days in Greece. There are many options that lead from Istanbul to Athens, for example. Happy cruising!
