How Do I Become A Travel Agent?
Learn How To Become A Travel Agent
Here is a brief list of things you should have/know in order for you to become a travel agent:
1. Working knowledge of a Global Distribution System (GDS) such as Apollo, Sabre or Worldspan.
This is what separates the rookies from the pros. If you don't know how to use these, you are a liability to any company looking for a travel agent.
2. Salesmanship.
Travel agents are without a doubt salespeople. Since airlines offer little or no commissions anymore, agents are forced to buy low sell high. You will make most of your living by purchasing tickets at a wholesale (or finding private fares through route manipulation, more on that later) and selling it at slightly below retail value. My old boss was great at this… he would offer a low price initially, and if the client didn't buy, he would raise the price the next day (not to mention the client's stress level).
People want to buy tickets at the lowest price, but they are afraid you aren't quoting them that. It takes a salesman to know the market and help guide their clients to making the decision they initially intended on.
3. Solid understanding of airline routes.
You'd be amazed at the deals you can get if you know how to play the game. For example, several years ago it would cost an arm and a leg if you bought a return ticket from San Francisco to Taipei; however, you could save hundreds of dollars by buying an additional ticket from Taipei to Hong Kong (and not using the ticket).
Routes are the same for travel agents as football players; the more you know, the better you play.
How Did I Become A Travel Agent?
I started at the bottom (and was paid accordingly). Once my knowledge and experience developed, so did my income. If you really want to become a travel agent, I suggest you focus on improving yours GDS knowledge, sales skills and routes. Trust me, it's definitely worth it.
