Arizona Tent Camping

Of all the places in the USA, the Southwest is without a doubt the most surprisingly enjoyable place for camping. Crossing Utah and Arizona tent camping, you can experience some of the most beautifully sparse landscape.

Here are some of my favorite places to visit in Utah and Arizona:

Arches National Park (Utah). I’ll be honest; most National Parks are a joy unto to themselves, but Arches gets bonus points for its proximity to both the Colorado river (great for afternoon swims) and the town of Moab, which is an adrenaline junkies dream. Here you can rent mountain bikes, kayaks, ATVs and rock climbing equipment to use during the day, and spend your evenings at one of the many local brew pubs.

Grand Canyon. If you enjoy tent camping and trekking, do yourself a favor and visit this modern world wonder in the late spring or autumn. Temperatures in the canyon easily break 100 degrees before noon in the summer, and many people have died of dehydration. Do yourself a favor and pack as much water as possible. Also, bring salty snacks to help you retain more water.

You can access the canyon from either the north or the south rim; the north rim is higher, less populated, more forested and the views are almost as good as the south rim (but not as good).

Monument Valley. This is one of the most remarkable places I’ve ever been. This series of rock formations in the heart of Navajo country has an energy about it that’s almost palpable. While tent camping is not allowed in the valley itself, you can (and should) hire a Navajo guide to give you an overnight jeep tour, where you sleep in a large tent (known as a hogan) in the heart of the valley. They also serve delicious dinner and breakfast for less than $60 for the total package.

For anyone interested in Utah and Arizona tent camping, these are your absolute must sees. I would also recommend Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks in Utah; you should be able to see both in less than a week (or three days if you rush).
