Here are some strategies for getting the lowest hotel rates imaginable: Buy out of season. This doesn’t necessarily mean Chicago in the middle of winter. You’d be amazed at how many hotels in the Caribbean drop their prices during the autumn, even though the weather is pretty much the same it was in the summer. The reason? Simple; less people are visiting. It’s the classic law of supply and demand; during the off months demand dries up, so you can find some super discount rates without sacrificing quality. Join an organization. There are literally thousands of organizations that get discount rates from hotels around the world. The most popular are AAA insurance, the AARP, travel agents IATA cards. Your employer can often help out, too. If you work for any hotel or travel provider, they will give you super discount hotel rates. When I was in college I worked in a restaurant at a Doubletree hotel, and had the pleasure of booking Embassy Suites (including free drinks and breakfast) for a whopping $39 per night. Also, you can travel with the herd: if you are interested in a convention, sign up and take advantage of their special negotiated hotel rates. Consider day rates. This works really well if you just need a place to stay for the afternoon. Call a hotel and request early check in with a day rate: often times, they have openings during the day (thanks to late check ins) and will gladly offer you a nice discount.
